Bascom House Shaw Nature Reserve

I painted with the Missouri Plein Air painters yesterday morning. A storm blew in just before I finished this piece – love that packable rain poncho. Got a little help and friendly advice regarding the composition and color from my friend Jan Trager who was doing a very fine, sunlit painting closer to the house. I’ve been experimenting with backlit subjects and learning a lot about color and value… It’s easier for me to see the value ranges against the light, somehow. The challenge is finding the right hue and value to capture the scene (and not going blind in the process!).
