Plein Air through the window?

Tom's Vintage Boots

Tom’s Boots

Well, I wimped out today and did a “half ” plein air piece.  Tom and I recently discovered that his old 70s hiking boots are actually considered vintage finds on ebay and etsy – hmmm.  I’ve been meaning to paint them for awhile and this cold weekend seemed like the perfect time. I borrowed his boots, put them outside on our patio and painted them from inside our house, looking through the patio doors. I’m not sure if painting them in the outside light, with my easel catching half sunlight and half kitchen overhead light is really true to the spirit of plein air, but it was nice not having to wear my thermal overalls and fingerless gloves! These boots went with Tom and his brother, Mark on a trip out west and saw some action in the Rocky Mountains among other places. The painting is an 11×14 oil on panel.
