Drawing Birds

White-crowned Sparrow

White-crowned Sparrow

This is (I think) a White-crowned Sparrow. I used a photo reference taken at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to make this drawing. It’s graphite and colored pencil on vellum bristol drawing paper – 11×14. I like the combination of a graphite pencil with very light strokes of colored pencil on top. The final piece suggests the subtle colors of nature while still allowing you to see that it’s a pencil drawing. I like to achieve that with paint, too. When someone tells me that something looks like a photograph, I feel a little bit disappointed even though I know it’s meant to be a compliment.
