Since I’ve lately been playing with charcoal drawing, I thought it might be fun and challenging to draw faces expressing different emotions. I want to practice with this medium in its various forms and I think this will be a good theme to explore. This first is ‘Sceptical’. I think she looks disbelieving but possibly open to persuasion. The drawing is 11×14 on Strathmore vellum bristol paper. I used powdered, compressed and charcoal pencils (white and black) for this piece. I have an old photo of my mother and used it as the model for the form, but this is not a very good likeness. The photo is very small, but gives enough information to see the form of the head and the eyes. I think I’ll try for 10-12 more drawings in this series – should be fun!
